The Sultanate of Oman secured membership of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the period 2022-2024 after receiving the majority of votes when UN member states convened in New York last night.

In a statement to the Oman News Agency (ONA), Dr. Mohammed Awadh Alhassan, the Sultanate’s Permanent Representative at the UN, said: “This is yet another podium ascended by the Sultanate in the international arena. The opportunity will be utilised to develop economic and social sectors in the Sultanate within the context of Oman Vision 2040.”

The strong, prominent support of the global community at this significant economic and social event demonstrates recognition of the Sultanate’s role and status in today’s world.

ECOSOC is the third highest UN organisation after the General Assembly and the Security Council. It brings people and issues together to promote collective action for a sustainable world by supporting the economic and social plans of member states.
