Bilateral relations

Since the official establishment of diplomatic relations on May 7th 1972 and with a backdrop of more than 400 years of friendly contacts between them, Oman and Japan have shared friendly cultural, political and diplomatic relations for many decades. The growing interaction and cooperation between the two governments has been reflected in many areas over the years.

Key objectives

The aims of Oman’s mission to Japan include:

  • Promoting political and diplomatic cooperation
  • Security and defence cooperation
  • Facilitating trade and investment between the two countries
  • Promoting cultural, educational, and scientific exchanges
  • Providing efficient consular services and supporting Omani nationals who visit or live in Japan.

Political and diplomatic cooperation

Oman and Japan share continually growing relations, as well as a strong desire to further strengthen partnership and cooperation between the two countries at all levels and in all fields.

Bearing in mind the geopolitical importance of Oman, both sides share a common interest in strengthening cooperation on maritime security. The Sultanate is committed to working with Japan to promote peace and stability based on dialogue and upon the fundamental principles of the rule of law and the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law.

The signing of a Memorandum on Policy Dialogue and Consultations between the Foreign Ministry of the Sultanate of Oman and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has further enhanced relations between the two countries and effectively facilitated a continuing exchange of views on bilateral, regional, and international issues.

Oman and Japan continue to support international peace initiatives such as the Middle East Desalination Research Centre (MEDRC), where both nations are members of the Executive Council.

Trade and investment

Economic, trade and technical cooperation between Japan and Oman has been the backbone of a long and fruitful relationship that continues to prosper and grow.

Although oil and gas represent 99% of Japan's total imports from Oman, imports of fisheries and agricultural products from Oman are growing and becoming more significant. Oman is also a major importer of Japanese automobiles, machinery and electric appliances, among other products.

While economic relations have been based in these key areas and industries for many years, the nature of this overall relationship is far greater and is set to grow and diversify even further in the coming years.

Areas in which this economic diversification is exemplified include wide-ranging development projects in Oman and in the fields of technology transfer and human resource development. Cooperation with Japanese industries and technologies is set to become a major aspect of this new area of economic relations between the two nations as Japanese investments and financing in Omani projects continue to expand and provide mutual benefits. Cultural, educational and scientific exchanges

One of the most important aspects of strengthening bilateral ties in today’s world is the encouragement of cultural understanding.

Japan and Oman, whose ties stretch as far back as the 17th century and who have shared close relations since 1972, recognise this need and give special emphasis to the promotion of culture through various events and activities. These have included exhibitions, special symposiums, lectures, film screenings, exchanges of Omani and Japanese students, sporting encounters, music and dance performances, cooperation in various academic and research fields and other initiatives and special occasions.

Another major development in Oman-Japan relations was the establishment of the Sultan Qaboos Chair for Middle Eastern studies at the University of Tokyo in 2010 for the purpose of promoting Middle Eastern Studies and further exchanges of Japanese and Omani students across borders.

The Embassy plays an important role in cross-cultural understanding by disseminating accurate information about Oman and its culture. We believe that educating the public is a great way of introducing our beautiful country to the friendly people of Japan. The Embassy therefore regularly invites the Japanese public, including students, to attend lectures, seminars and other fun, educational events.
