Oman participates in the opening of 76th UN General Assembly

The Sultanate took part in the opening of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York, two years after its meetings were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The session is scheduled to continue until early December,

The Sultanate was represented by Dr Mohammed bin Awad Alhassan, the Sultanate's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York

In his speech at the launch of the session, His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, said the world must wake up, stressing that climate change has already caused global disasters.

He explained that Covid-19 and climate breakdown demonstrated the vulnerability of societies on the planet, calling on countries to reduce emissions by 2030 and provide $100 billion to developing countries.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations also called for the need to invest in prevention, the promotion of peace and progress in the field of nuclear disarmament as well as the fight against terrorism.
