Message from the Head of Mission

Oman-Ambassador-PretoriaDear visitor,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the official page of the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in the Republic of South Africa

I am honoured and privileged to have been appointed as Head of Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the Republic of South Africa in August 2022.

My first visit to South Africa was in 2005 to take part in a high-level ministerial meeting in Pretoria, when I witnessed the great potential for further growth in cooperation between our two countries.

Today we are seeing tremendous advancement in bilateral cooperation agreements and trade exchanges.

In the third quarter of 2022 exports from Oman to South Africa were worth 1.35 billion USD and exports from South Africa to Oman were 33 million USD

Throughout my mission here, I look forward to engaging with South Africa’s wide, graceful diversity and its great potential. I also look forward to working closely with the governments and citizens of both countries to enhance bilateral relations.

Bilateral Relations

Oman and South Africa share a cordial relationship that goes back a long way in the history that links the Sultanate and the continent of Africa.

This relationship was enhanced after Nelson Mandela was elected President of South Africa in 1994 and then visited the Sultanate of Oman in May 1999 and April 2002 to meet with His late Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. During their meetings they discussed the way forward and paved the way for both countries to open their embassies.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in October 1995. South Africa opened its Embassy in Muscat in 2002, while Sultanate of Oman opened its Embassy in Pretoria in 2003.

Strengthening trade and investment opportunities in both countries can only deepen economic ties between the two countries in various sectors.

  • Agreement on the avoidance of double taxation
  • Agreement on cooperation in the field of science and technology
  • Trade Agreement
  • Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of law
  • Agreement on cooperation between the Omani and South African Chambers of Commerce and Industry

Trade and investment

The trade and investment section of Oman’s Embassy in South Africa works to follow the blueprint and achieve the strategic direction and goals of Oman Vision 2040, endorsed by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik in 2021. Oman’s export and import trade with South Africa is increasing year by year.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1995, there have been several visits by high-level delegations from both counties which have played a role in enhancing bilateral relations and trade and investment between the two countries.
