Oman ranked first in Arab world in scientific competition in Kuwait
The Sultanate of Oman has won first place in the Arab world in the middle school category of the Sheikha Fadia Al Saad Al Sabah Scientific Competition for Research and Projects in Kuwait for the 2023/2024 academic year.
The winning project, a biological pesticide, was presented by students Rahaf bint Waleed bin Khalfaan Al Shalya and Fatima bint Yousef bin Saeed Al Maawaliya from Al Durra Al Hashimiya School in the South Al Batinah Educational Directorate, under the supervision of teacher Suad bint Suleiman bin Salem Al Hasniya.
Amani bint Abdullah Al Aufiya, a specialist in scientific innovation at the Ministry of Education, explained that the competition aims to nurture talented female students in the fields of science and technology, while also promoting teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Oman participated this year with two projects in the middle and high school categories. The prize winning middle school project, “Biological Pesticide from Myrtle Leaves,” focused on finding an environmentally friendly treatment to combat hoppers, dubas bugs, and aphids.
The high school project involved converting plastic waste into reduced graphene oxide for use in supercapacitors.
