Bilateral Relations

The long-standing relations between Oman and Algeria are fraternal and unique in their character. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two brotherly countries in 1973, the partnership between them has been strong and distinguished by its ongoing development, thanks to the directives of the leadership of the two brotherly countries.

In order to strengthen this partnership, many agreements and memoranda of understanding have been signed in various fields over the years.

This process began with the signing on February 23rd, 1991, of the “Agreement Establishing the Joint Committee between the Government of the Sultanate of Oman and the Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.”

Main Objectives

  • Promoting political and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries
  • Encouraging and supporting trade partnerships between the two countries
  • Seeking to facilitate investment projects between the two countries
  • Strengthening cultural, scientific and educational ties

Political and diplomatic cooperation

The Sultanate of Oman and Algeria work together to strengthen bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries. Oman remains committed to working and coordinating with Algeria in order to find solutions to issues through dialogue and to achieve peace and stability in the Arab region.

To consolidate coordination and continuous consultation, in 2015 the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Algeria signed a memorandum of understanding on holding regular political consultations between their foreign ministries.

Trade and investment

The commercial mission of the Embassy is to strengthen cooperation agreements and to build trade and investment partnerships that benefit both parties.

One example of these positive bilateral experiences is the partnership between the Omani Bahwan Group and the Algerian National Oil Management Company (Sontrach) for the production of ammonia and urea.

Many of the agreements signed between the two countries support and encourage bilateral trade and investment partnerships. These include an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation, which has been in force since 2003; an agreement on the encouragement and mutual protection of investment, signed in 2002 and an agreement establishing the Omani-Algerian Business Council, signed in 2006.

The Embassy works continuously to promote Oman's Vision 2040 and the Sultanate’s favourable and safe investment climate.

Cultural, educational and scientific exchanges

The scientific and cultural fields have an important place in the vision of both Oman and Algeria. This is reflected through ongoing cultural exchanges, with high-level participation in such exchanges and other events. The Embassy also seeks to enhance exchange opportunities in the scientific field between the two countries.

The Mission's work to enhance cooperation in the areas of culture, education and science is supported by a memorandum of understanding in the field of culture signed in 2012 and a scientific and technical cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in 2006.
