Sayyid Asaad heads Oman delegation at G20 Summit
Representing His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, is heading the delegation of the Sultanate of Oman to the G20 Summit, which began its work today in the Indian capital, New Delhi.
His Highness was welcomed at the summit venue by Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister.
Numerous heads of state and heads of government are taking part in this the 18th G20 Summit.
At the opening of the summit Sayid Asaad delivered a speech, as follows:
“First of all, I have the honour to convey to you the greetings of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan of Oman, his good wishes for success at this summit and his sincere appreciation for the work that has been accomplished in various tracks during the period of the Indian presidency.
We welcome the Indian presidency’s theme for this year’s edition of the G20, “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” We stress the importance of joint action, not only for the preservation and protection of the Earth, but for the progress and prosperity of all humanity.
The Sultanate of Oman believes in the spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility and is committed to them in pursuit of public benefit.
Therefore, we in the Sultanate of Oman are aware of our role and responsibility and we affirm our commitment to the visions of the international community and its many initiatives in order to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement, to name but two.
In conclusion, we look forward to continuing and strengthening cooperation and partnership with all the G20 countries, in all areas that benefit everyone.
We cannot fail to express our thanks and appreciation to the friendly Republic of India for its efforts to prepare for this summit and for its warm reception and generous hospitality.”
The 18th summit of the G20 under the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future” focuses on the issue of sustainable development and on measures to spread economic growth in a more balanced manner between developed and developing countries.
The summit is discussing a wide range of key issues, including ways to promote green development, finance plans to address the effects of climate change and the European Union's environment and climate action programme. The summit is also considering how to promote strong and sustainable economic growth and facilitate progress towards implementing the United Nations plan for sustainable development. The Summit will also discuss technological transformation, digital infrastructure and institutional efforts to promote international development.
Other topics topics to be discussed include issues as diverse as loans to developing countries, debt structuring, cryptocurrency regulation and geopolitical tensions.
A declaration of the G20 leaders will be adopted at the end of the summit stating the leaders' commitment to the priorities discussed and agreed upon during ministerial meetings and the meetings of relevant working groups.
The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the G20 process at the special invitation of the Republic of India, confirming the depth of relations between the two countries. This participation consolidates the position of the Sultanate of Oman as an active partner at the regional and international levels.
