I am pleased to welcome you to the official page of the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Hungary.

The Embassy is working hard, under the directives of the Foreign Ministry, to consolidate the existing friendly relations between the Sultanate and the Republic of Hungary and to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

This page represents a window through which Omani citizens and friends in Hungary can obtain information about relations between Oman and Hungary.

It also provides information about ways to communicate with the Embassy and access the services it provides.

Bilateral relations

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik issued a Royal Decree on May 9th, 2023 to open the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Hungary.

Diplomatic relations were established between the two countries in 1990.

The two countries enjoy positive relations built on mutual respect.

There have been many mutual visits by officials and the two countries have concluded agreements and memoranda of understanding in the political, diplomatic, economic, investment, energy, higher education, and cultural fields, as well as a memorandum of understanding with the Diplomatic Academy.

All these agreements and MoUs serve the interests of both the Omani and Hungarian governments and their peoples.

  1. Air Transport Regulation Agreement.
  2. Agreement to avoid double taxation and prevent tax evasion.
  3. Cooperation agreement in the field of higher education.
  4. Agreement on encouragement and protection of mutual investments.
  5. Agreement on mutual exemption from visas for holders of diplomatic, special and service passports.
  6. A memorandum of understanding between the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Arab-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce.
  7. Memorandum of Understanding regarding consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries.
  8. Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of higher education.
  9. Memorandum of understanding between the Omani Foreign Ministry and the Hungarian Foreign Ministry in the field of diplomatic studies and training.
  10. Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of water management.
  11. Memorandum of Understanding in the field of low-carbon hydrogen and renewable hydrogen.

Consular services

Once it is fully operational the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Hungary will provide a range of consular services to both Omani citizens visiting Hungary and Hungarian citizens or residents wishing to visit the Sultanate for tourism or business purposes.

Key objectives

The Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Hungary seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • Enhancing bilateral relations.
  • Strengthening political and diplomatic cooperation.
  • Facilitating trade and investment between the two countries.
  • Encouraging cultural, educational and scientific exchanges.
  • Exchanging parliamentary experiences.
  • Cooperation in the health field.

Political and diplomatic cooperation

On the political level, relations between Oman and Hungary are characterised by a convergence of views and positions on many regional and international issues.

Regular political consultation sessions and frequent mutual visits between senior officials of the two countries, enable discussions on ways to enhance cooperation and allow for the exchange of views on topics of common interest.

Oman and Hungary, based on their distinguished bilateral relations, are working to coordinate their efforts to establish the foundations of security and stability in the region and the world in general.

This is achieved by encouraging constructive dialogue and negotiation to resolve outstanding issues and avoid escalation in disputes.

Trade and investment

In order to develop economic and trade relations Oman and Hungary signed an agreement on mutual encouragement and protection of investment in 2022.

The Sultanate is one of the most important destinations for the Hungarian travel and tourism market, as it is often visited by Hungarians keen to enjoy its varied attractions.

Educational exchanges

The number of Omani students studying in Hungarian educational institutions is increasing significantly, as a result of the Ministry of Higher Education signing a cooperation agreement with its Hungarian counterpart in 2021.
