Agreements signed to build maritime history museum

Maritime history museum to be built in Sur

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has signed two agreements worth 12 million Omani rials to fund the initial stages of the Maritime History Museum project in Wilayat Sur, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

The agreements were signed with Oman LNG and the Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO), both affiliates of the Oman Investment Authority.

The agreements were signed by Salem bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, with Engineer Hamad bin Mohammed Al Nu'amani, CEO of Oman LNG, and Dr Ahmed bin Said Al Marhoobi, CEO of OMIFCO, at the Ministry’s headquarters.

Attending the signing were Abdulsalam bin Mohammed Al Murshidi, Head of the Oman Investment Authority, along with several officials.

Consulting services for design and project supervision were awarded to Ibrahim Jaidah Architects, a firm specialising in architectural design, contract management and cultural heritage consultancy.

The execution will be managed by Haley Sharpe Design, a leading British company in the museum and cultural exhibition sector with extensive experience in maritime history content development for museums globally.

Yahya Badr Al Malek Al Ma'awali, Governor of South A'Sharqiyah, said the Oman Maritime Museum will be a major asset to the heritage and tourism sector in Wilayat Sur and the wider governorate, supporting the local economy across various fields and enhancing Sur’s infrastructure and urban design.

The Museum will showcase Oman’s long-standing maritime and trading heritage, highlighting its pivotal role in fostering cultural exchange among nations.

It will also document the rich maritime legacy integral to Omani identity, contributing to scientific research and studies on Omani maritime history.
