Major project to develop ports in Dhofar
The Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources has launched a major project to develop two new fishing ports in Sadah, alongside upgrading the ports of Raysut and the Al Hallaniyat Islands in Dhofar Governorate, with a total investment of 11.5 million Omani Rials (OMR).
The project includes the construction of two new fishing ports in Hasik and Hadbeen, located within the Wilayat of Sadah. In addition, the Ministry is developing infrastructure at the fishing port in the Al Hallaniyat Islands, which includes the establishment of an administrative complex and service facilities. Renovation works are also underway at Raysut Port and a consultant has been appointed to design a new facility in the Fazaayah area in the Wilayat of Rakhyut.
Abdul Nasser bin Ubaid Ghawas, Director of the Fisheries Department in Dhofar Governorate, stated that the Ministry has already begun the design and construction works for the Hasik and Hadbeen ports with a total budget of nearly six million OMR. These works include the construction of breakwaters, floating docks, and essential infrastructure such as roads, lighting and facilities for fishing crews.
The renovation of Raysut Port, costing three million OMR, involves the construction of a 610-metre-long breakwater, a 70-metre fixed quay and a 250-metre rock wall to prevent sand from entering the port. Additionally, around 100,000 cubic metres of sand will be removed and 35,000 square metres of land near the fixed quay will be reclaimed.
Ghawas said that the Al Hallaniyat Islands fishing port project, valued at 2.5 million OMR, will be implemented over the next two years, including the construction of an administrative complex and service facilities.
“These projects are essential for developing the fisheries sector and improving maritime transport in Dhofar Governorate, he added.”
The Ministry is also working to establish an economic management system for fishing ports aimed at enhancing investment and increasing the sector’s contribution to the national economy. The Ministry recently signed an agreement with the private sector to manage the fishing port in Taqah.
There are currently four operational fishing ports in Dhofar Governorate, located in Salalah, Taqah, Mirbat, and the Al Hallaniyat Islands.
